หนังสือภาพเล่มนี้เป็นวัตถุทดลองที่เป็นผลจากการทำงานร่วมกันระหว่างนักวิจัย (ธนาวิ โชติประดิษฐ) กับผู้ช่วยวิจัย / ศิลปิน (กรกฤช เจียรพินิจนันท์) โดยเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของโครงการวิจัย “ปริซึมของภาพถ่าย: การแตกตัวขององค์ความรู้และความทรงจำว่าด้วยเหตุการณ์ 6 ตุลา” ภายใต้ทุนพัฒนาศักยภาพในการทำงานวิจัยของอาจารย์รุ่นใหม่ของสำนักงานกองทุนสนับสนุนการวิจัย (สกว.) ประจำปี 2562

การล้อมปราบที่มหาวิทยาลัยธรรมศาสตร์เมื่อวันที่ 6 ตุลาคม พ.ศ. 2519 เป็นกรณีนองเลือดครั้งใหญ่ที่สุดครั้งหนึ่งในประวัติศาสตร์ไทยสมัยใหม่ มีสถานะเป็น “ประวัติศาสตร์บาดแผล” (wounded history) กล่าวคือเป็นเหตุการณ์ในอดีตที่มีความรุนแรง มีผลสะเทือนทิ้งรอยฝังลึกและยากจะเข้าใจได้ตามกรอบเหตุผลและศีลธรรมจรรยาชุดหนึ่ง และยังไม่ได้รับการชำระสะสางมาจนปัจจุบัน ถึงแม้ว่าตลอดช่วงหลายสิบปีที่ผ่านมาจะมีการรื้อฟื้นความทรงจำเรื่อง 6 ตุลาและมีงานเขียนทางวิชาการชิ้นสำคัญเกิดขึ้นมาไม่น้อย แต่เหตุการณ์ 6 ตุลายังคงเป็นเรื่องชายขอบในประวัติศาสตร์ไทยฉบับทางการ ยิ่งไปกว่านั้น ประเด็นเชิงศิลปะที่อาจช่วยส่องสะท้อนให้เห็นแง่มุมอื่นของเหตุการณ์ก็ยังเป็นส่วนที่ไม่ได้รับความสนใจจากนักวิชาการมากนัก โครงการ “ปริซึมของภาพถ่าย: การแตกตัวขององค์ความรู้และความทรงจำว่าด้วยเหตุการณ์ 6 ตุลา” เสนอว่าองค์ความรู้ทางประวัติศาสตร์ศิลปะและวัฒนธรรมทางสายตา (visual culture) โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งทฤษฎีภาพถ่ายนั้นมีศักยภาพที่จะนำมาใช้ในการศึกษาเหตุการณ์ 6 ตุลาได้

หนังสือเล่มนี้เป็นผลลัพธ์จากการสำรวจแหล่งข้อมูลที่เก็บรวบรวมเอกสาร สิ่งพิมพ์และภาพถ่ายเหตุการณ์ 6 ตุลา ได้แก่ หอจดหมายเหตุมหาวิทยาลัยธรรมศาสตร์, โครงการ “บันทึก 6 ตุลา”, เว็บไซต์ 2519.net และสมาคมนักข่าว นักหนังสือพิมพ์แห่งประเทศไทย โดยครอบคลุมระยะเวลาทั้งช่วงก่อนและหลังเหตุการณ์ 6 ตุลา

ถึงแม้ว่าข้อมูลชั้นต้นเหล่านี้จะได้รับการจัดเก็บอย่างเป็นระบบ แต่ก็ยังมีภาพถ่ายและฟิล์มสไลด์จำนวนมากที่ยังไม่สามารถระบุรายละเอียดที่ครบถ้วนได้ ทั้งนี้ ภาพบางภาพยังมีความคลุมเครือว่าเป็นภาพของเหตุการณ์ 14 ตุลา (2516) หรือเหตุการณ์ 6 ตุลา (2519) กันแน่ หนังสือเล่มนี้ได้สอดแทรกภาพที่มีลักษณะดังกล่าวไว้โดยจงใจให้เป็นตัวก่อกวน ที่สะท้อนให้เห็นถึงลักษณะชายขอบของความทรงจำเรื่อง 6 ตุลาในทางสาธารณะ ที่เรามักได้ยินความสับสนระหว่างเหตุการณ์ทั้งสอง โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่ง การรวมร่างเป็น “เหตุการณ์ 14 ตุลา 2519”

ในงานเขียนทางประวัติศาสตร์ ภาพถ่ายบุคคลและเหตุการณ์ทำหน้าที่เป็น “ภาพประกอบเรื่องราว” แต่ “ภาพ” (image) โดยตัวมันเองคืออะไร? มีศักยภาพที่จะบอกหรือไม่บอกอะไร? ให้ความกระจ่างหรือความสับสน? หรือทั้งหมดผสมผสานปนเปกันไป? ภาพเป็นได้มากกว่าบันทึกของสิ่งที่ผ่านไปแล้วได้หรือไม่? เมื่อภาพประกบเข้ากับข้อความในรูปแบบต่าง ๆ ภาพทำงานอย่างไร?

This photo book is a result of an experimental collaboration between a researcher, Thanavi Chotpradit, and a research assistant/artist, Kornkrit Jianpinidnan. It forms part of the research project “Prism of Photography: Dispersion of Knowledge and Memories of the 6th October Massacre” funded by the 2019 Research Grant for New Scholars of Thailand Research Fund (TRF).

The crackdown at Thammasat University on 6 October 1976 was one of the bloodiest massacres in the history of modern Thailand. It stands as wounded history, a violent and traumatic event which is difficult to comprehend using any single set of rational or moral framework. The incident has never been fully investigated or resolved to the present day. Even though, for the past several decades, there have been attempts to recover memories of the 6th October Massacre through several important academic writings, but the 6th October Massacre remains at the periphery of Thailand’s official history. What’s more, many artistic viewpoints that could help us uncover further aspects of the event are still being ignored by academics. This project, “Prism of Photography: Dispersion of Knowledge and Memories of the 6th October Massacre”, argues that components of art history and visual culture, especially photography theory, can be useful in the study of this historical event. This photo book is a result of a survey into the archives that house documents, publications and photographs concerning the 6th October Massacre—namely, Thammasat University Archives, Documentation of Oct 6, Thai Journalists Association and the 2519.net website—which spans the period before and after 6 October 1976.

While these primary data have been systematically stored, there remain a large quantity of photographs and slide films that cannot be fully identified. It is unclear whether certain images came from the 14th October Incident (1973) or the 6th October Massacre (1976). This book intentionally includes these photographs to serve as disruptors that highlight the marginalized nature of public memories of the 6th October Massacre. After all, we often hear accounts which confuse the two events, often fusing them into one “14th October 1973 Incident.”

In most history books, portrait and photojournalism act as illustrations to support the story, but what is “the image” in itself? Does it have an ability to reveal or not reveal something? Does it bring about clarity or confusion, or both in a jumble? Can the image be more than a record of things past? When putting together the image and different forms of text in different media, how would the image operate?
